On the wall in my office is a photograph of Martin Luther King Junior, over the words of one of his quotations: “Our lives begin to end the moment we remain silent about things that matter.” It is a principle I live by – and one I often have to draw to the attention of clients. The criminal justice system can grind slowly.
I read with pleasure and respect an article this weekend by Edward Greenspan. Mr. Greenspan is a very senior member of the criminal Bar. He most recently defended Conrad Black against charges in the United States. Mr. Black has been highly critical of Mr. Greesnpan, commenting about his work on the case in the verbose and self-serving manner which characterizes Mr. Black. It is not unusual for clients to blame their lawyers when things don’t go their way. You need a thick skin in this job. But Mr.
Whenever people learn that I am a defence lawyer, they invariably ask me the same question: “how can you sleep at night, knowing that because of you a guilty person might go free?” And my answer is always the same: I’m not kept awake nights at the thought of a guilty person going free. What wakens me at 2:00 and 3:00 and 4:00 a.m. is the thought that an innocent person might be convicted.
On June 9, 2016 the Bonn Law team had the rewarding opportunity to assist Community Living Belleville & Area through the United Way Day of Caring.
Bonn Law was proud to support the Ontario Trial Lawyers Association Bike Helmets on Kids campaign once again in 2015. Along with other local law firms, we donated nearly 200 bike helmets this year, which were handed out at bike rodeos at local schools in conjunction with local police.
We were extremely proud to ride the Big Bike around Trenton on May 5th in support of the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Together, the Bonn Law staff helped raise more than $1200 for the Foundation! The Big Bike will be travelling around Belleville, ON on May 7th and May 8th so be sure cheer on the riders by giving them a honk and a wave.
On Sunday April 27, 2014 the lawyers and staff of Bonn Law participated in the Quinte West Healthy Half Marathon in support of the Trenton Memorial Hospital Foundation. We had great participation with 17 people from the Bonn Law team participating in the 10k run, 5k run and 5k walk.
I made it! After many months of planning and hours of training I completed my first ultra-marathon, running around the Bay of Quinte to celebrate my 40th birthday. Even better, with the support of the community, my family and the fantastic staff at Bonn Law, we were able to raise over $9,000 for the Children’s Treatment Centre (CTC) at Belleville General Hospital.
Bonn Law Office has been serving the Quinte Area for over 42 years. Our very own Kris Bonn is turning 40 this year. He has completed Ironman Triathlons and marathons, but never an ultra marathon, which is is a run that goes at least 50 kms. To celebrate turning 40, Kris decided to organize his own ultra marathon.
